That’s It! I can’t take it anymore, so I have to speak out about the Michigan 109th
State House District race.
We have all been inundated by political ads. The mud throwing ads attacking Karl
Bohnak are especially disturbing. The ads get very personal. One of the ads says
when speaking about Karl Bohnak that “It is sad to a see a nice man go bad”.
Another ad calls Karl, “Upper Michigan’s Weird Crazy Uncle”. Another ad infers
that “Karl and his panel of radical politicians” could impact the abortion rights in
Michigan. The ads are amateurishly produced and have many misleading
statements.
The ads that infer that Karl Bohnak or any other person running for office in
Michigan could impact abortion rights in Michigan, in my opinion, are just wrong!
In Michigan in 2022 proposal 3 was passed which was the reproductive Freedom
Initiative. This initiative passed with about 56.6% of the vote yes, and 43.4% of the
vote no. With the passing of proposal 3, this codified reproductive rights in
including access to abortion in the constitution of Michigan. It is my
understanding that now that this is part of the Michigan Constitution the only way
it could be changed is if someone decided to gather enough signatures to get a new
proposal put on the ballot at some time in the future and have Michigan voters vote
on this issue again. The chance of that happening in my opinion is slim to none.
In one of the attack ads against Karl, a young girl asked if she had a say in her
reproductive rights. The ad infers that if Karl is in Lansing, she doesn’t have a say
in her reproductive rights. That is absolutely wrong. The truth of the matter is she
does have a say in her reproductive rights given to her by proposal 3 in the 2022
election. To say she doesn’t have a say in her rights, is simply a scare tactic to be
used to influence uneducated voters about reproductive rights.
The negative attack ads campaign by the Hill team had outspent the Bohnak
campaign 3 to 1. A story on TV-6 showed the Hill campaign spent $197,000.00
compared to Bohnak spending $57,000.00. The spending information came from
the latest report from the Michigan Secretary of State.
In the election on November 5 th , you can make a statement about the negative ads
by voting against the Jenn Hill political team and the attack ads. Your vote can also
signal to future political campaigns that even if you outspend your opponent 3 to 1,
negative attack ads can work against the candidate that runs those negative ads.
The republican party has also funded ads against the Jenn Hill team, but I have not
seen the nasty personal attacks that have been funded by the Jenn Hill campaign
against Karl Bohnak. Viewers of all political ads need to be cautious about the
information they get from political ads. There is no fact checking on most political
ads and in many cases, they can at a minimum be misleading and in the worst case
scenario they can be putting out intentionally wrong or false information.
